Direct Cremation

Direct Cremation is a disposition option in which the body is cremated in the days immediately following death, without a funeral service beforehand. Direct Cremation is the most economic (affordable) option for disposition.

Because Direct Cremation does not include a formal funeral or any pre-funeral events, many of the costs of a traditional funeral are avoided.

  • The body is cremated within a few days after death as soon as necessary schedules have been completed and the required permit has been obtained
  • The body is usually cremated in a simple container, rather than an expensive casket
  • There is no viewing, visitation, or wake before the cremation, which eliminates the costs associated therewith
  • A memorial service may be held at a later date, which eliminates the need for an expensive casket and funeral arrangements
  • Removal of body from place of death to funeral home for preservation until service
  • Registration of death
  • Completion of necessary schedules in order to obtain permit for permission to cremate
  • Body then placed in suitable cremation coffin and transported to crematorium
  • Body cremated
  • Ashes may either be scattered at the crematorium or returned to the family
  • Should the family wish to retain the ashes, an urn will be provided

If one would like to have a service before the cremation and have the deceased present at the service, you will not be planning a direct cremation, but rather a “traditional” cremation.

A Traditional Service with Cremation is the best way to incorporate the benefits of both a traditional funeral service and cremation. The decedent would be prepared and placed in a coffin / casket. The funeral service will be held with coffin / casket present. Typically these services take place in a church or a chapel and may include prayers, poems, or songs to remember the deceased. The cremation would be performed after the services are complete.

A service held on a weekend or public holiday with attendance will also be considered a Traditional Service with Cremation. Due to the service being held on a weekend or public holiday, additional after-hours fees will also be levied.

There are many funeral service options available to families who select burial as the final disposition of their loved one. A traditional funeral service consists of a time for a private or public viewing of the deceased, a funeral service to remember and honour them, followed by a procession to the cemetery for a graveside ceremony to formally say goodbye. Within this framework, there are numerous variations by which to specifically tailor a funeral service to respect the wishes of the decedent and their family.
